Shaizan Malik

 

Let me introduce you to Shaizan Malik.  Shaizan works at Cisco, a networking, security, collaboration software company.  They develop and grow companies’ software programs.  As a systems architect Shaizan will design a solution for various account managers to grow their customers software.

 All throughout High School and college he was interested in finance.  His first job in sales however took him down a different path.  He realized he excelled in sales and from there got introduced to technology sales.  His first job in tech sales has stood out the most to him so far.  At his previous employer they sold technology solutions in telephones such as Webex.  That role interested him and took him to where he is at now.

 Company culture is important to Shaizan.  Before deciding on whether he would like to apply at a company or take a position he will check out the companies’ profile on LinkedIn and Glassdoor.  Along with checking out their culture he will also look at their financial history and try to connect with a couple managers and employees to get a feel for the company.

 Shaizan has had at least one mentor at every company he has worked at.  He would find someone who has been successful in the field with that particular company to help provide him with advice and help him develop professionally.  However, his first mentor stands out the most as he taught him how to critical think which has been proven critical in his line of work.

 There was a time Shaizan recalls when he put together a solution and presented in front of the customer.  He didn’t realize at the time that he missed a key component to the presentation.  The customer at the time was itinually upset however, they did end up winning the deal.  At the end he took this as a learning opportunity to slow down when he worked and double check everything before presenting to the customer.  This learning experience has helped him become successful.  Along with being competitive.  Being competitive helps motivate him. 

 Shaizan would like to offer advice for anyone who like to get into his field and currently studying to get into his field.  There are so many different areas in the tech world you can get into.  Keep your mind open and explore all the fields to see which one interests you the most.  If you get rejected it is ok.  Move onto the next.  Do not let that discourage you from chasing your dream.  Continue to work on your craft and market yourself.

 Prioritizing your time with family and work is a must.  Shaizan doesn’t answer email after working hours.  And he will always inform his manager and coworkers when he will not be available.  He tries not to let work extend itself and makes sure he spends as much time with his family as possible.  Family time is very important to him.
